Bush OWNED on the eve the State of the Union Address
Mon Jan 30, 2006 at 11:40:12 AM PDT
Aljazeera just released a video of Dr. Ayman al Zawahiri, bin Laden's loyal sidekick, delivering a message taunting President Bush. Earlier this month, a CIA predator drone failed to assassinate al Zawahiri in a village near the Afghan-Pakistan border.
"My first message is to the butcher of Washington, Bush: You are not just defeated and lying about it, but you are, with God's help, a loser. You are bad luck to your people. You brought them disasters and catastrophes, and you will bring them even more disasters."

American Gulags

The Reuters news agency reports on America's dirty little secret: We have more prisoners than China. Only the well informed would know this fact, and thankfully that includes most members of Daily Kos. What can the Democratic Party do about this major problem.
U.S. prison population continued to grow in 2004
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. prison population, already the largest in the world, grew by 1.9 percent in 2004, leaving federal jails at 40 percent over capacity, according to Justice Department figures released on Sunday.
Inmates in federal, state, local and other prisons totaled nearly 2.3 million at the end of last year, the government said.

Event: Juan Cole lecturing at San Francisco State Univ. this Friday
Wed Oct 19, 2005 at 09:27:37 PM PDT
Bay Area Kossacks, here's your chance to hear Professor Juan Cole, an expert in Middle East issues, who blogs at
Informed Comment.
In a recent post, Prof. Cole analyzed the Zawahiri Letter, which is now thought to be an alleged forgery (by some).
Anyway, hope to see you there.
Can we stop using the word 'Breaking' for diary titles?

AIPAC and American National Security
Sun Oct 02, 2005 at 02:26:08 AM PDT
I just read a fascinating post on Professor Juan Cole's blog,
Informed Comment, about American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the
Larry Franklin espionage case. Now I know some members of the Democratic party are ardent defenders of Israel, and everyone is entitled to their opinion but I'm sure many of you will agree that espionage against the U.S. by a foreign power on American soil is a
serious breach of our national security.

America Looks in the Mirror, and Sees How Ugly it has Become

America Looks in the Mirror, and Sees How Ugly it has Become:
Racism, Price Gouging, and Fear after Hurricane Katrina
FEAR
"So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself..."
-Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1933.
Fear is a base human emotion that we've inherited from our ancestors, who needed it to survive in harsh environments teeming with large predators such as wolves, sabertooth tigers, and bears. Fast forward thousands of years later... most of humanity now lives in cities and no longer has to live in fear of the large predators that preyed upon our ancestors. Yet, with all that has changed in those thousands of years, humans still live in fear- we live in fear of ourselves.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I have found that the lack of leadership, as well as the media, contributed to the spread of irrational fear that has gripped parts of this nation. What follows is my attempt to chronicle the fearful and racist responses of other Americans.
Ex-Hostage: Rebels Wanted Bush Re-Elected

Remember claims from the Bush campaign that Kerry would be "soft on terrorism" or ridiculous claims from right wing nuts that terrorists
wanted Kerry to win.
Well check this article, `twas to be expected...
Ex-Hostage: Rebels Wanted Bush Re-Elected
One of the captors from the group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq said Bush's re-election would boost their cause, Malbrunot wrote in Friday's edition of Le Figaro, the French daily he works for.
"We want Bush because with him the American troops will stay in Iraq and that way we will be able to develop," Malbrunot cited the captor as saying.

1200 US troops have died in an unnecessary war, which some corporations considered an exciting new business venture.

Voting Machine Controversy
by Julie Carr Smyth
COLUMBUS - The head of a company vying to sell voting machines in Ohio told Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."
The Aug. 14 letter from Walden O'Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc. - who has become active in the re-election effort of President Bush - prompted Democrats this week to question the propriety of allowing O'Dell's company to calculate votes in the 2004 presidential election.
O'Dell attended a strategy pow-wow with wealthy Bush benefactors - known as Rangers and Pioneers - at the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch earlier this month. The next week, he penned invitations to a $1,000-a-plate fund-raiser to benefit the Ohio Republican Party's federal campaign fund - partially benefiting Bush - at his mansion in the Columbus suburb of Upper Arlington.
